Regulatory Provision of MSG in India
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has permitted the use of MSG under Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), meaning the quantity of the additive added to food shall be limited to the lowest possible level necessary to accomplish its desired effect. It is noteworthy that FSSAI has not allocated any prescribed an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for L-Glutamic Acid intake.
FSSAI allows the use of MSG as an additive under Good Manufacturing Practices. The regulatory body has not allocated an ADI for L-Glutamic acid.
FSSAI, under the provisions of Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Regulations, 2020, includes L-glutamic acid for use in foods for infant nutrition under Special Medical Purpose.
