MSG is Safe for Consumption

MSG is one of the past century’s most extensively studied food ingredients. Rigorous scientific research has shown that naturally derived seasoning MSG is safe to consume. Both the components of MSG – sodium and glutamate – are present in almost all foods we eat and can be safely metabolised in the body. In fact, our body cannot distinguish between added glutamate in the form of MSG or the glutamate innately occurring in the food.

Food regulators across the globe including USFDA, EFSA, JECFA and FSSAI deem MSG safe for consumption.

MSG Safety

Gut Health

Glutamate is shown to be more than just an umami flavoring agent; it plays a critical role in the body’s energy metabolism, particularly within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

Safe for Brain

Glutamate is a critical neurotransmitter that helps in the brain’s complex communication pathways. Additionally, the blood-brain barrier maintains the amount of glutamate in the brain so MSG has no impact on it.

Safe for fetus and infants

The placenta prevents the entry of glutamate from a mother to her fetus; so her consumption of MSG has no impact on the fetus. Infants have a mechanism to digest glutamate as it is abundantly present in mother’s milk.
